Elizabeth FitzRoy Support

Our Founder

Elizabeth FitzRoy Support was founded in 1962.

Elizabeth FitzRoy was a remarkable woman, an achiever who was passionate in her belief that people with learning disabilities should lead ordinary lives.

As the mother of a young son with Down’s syndrome, Elizabeth was concerned with the lack of understanding, respect and support that her son, Michael received. In particular she was vehemently opposed to the hospitalisation and institutionalisation of people with learning disabilities.

Elizabeth pioneered the idea of small family-sized homes that enable people with learning disabilities to receive individualised care and attention and opened the first Elizabeth FitzRoy home in Grayshott, Surrey in 1962.

Today we provide tailored support for almost 500 people and their families and have continued to grow to meet the constant demand for our services.
