Family story – Debbie

Debbie used to live at our supported living service in Wells-Next-The-Sea in Norfolk. She was supported to learn independent living skills such as shopping, cooking, doing her laundry and budgeting.

In 2008, Debbie moved into her own home, a bungalow in Fakenham, which she is very proud to own.

Her family visit regularly and are delighted that she has made this move. Her parents said, “We could see a big change in her from day one.  She has grown in confidence and is clearly much happier.”

Debbie now enjoys entertaining her family in her own home, including her young nephews who often come round to visit.

She has a busy but independent life. As well as having a paid  job each Tuesday, she has many hobbies and interests. Debbie volunteers at the Hawk and Owl Conservancy and is very keen on conservation and the outdoor life.  She has helped the wardens by advising on disabled access and other issues affecting visitors with a variety of disabilities.

She is also part of the “Bright Sparks” team based at the Day Centre in Fakenham. This is a group of people with learning disabilities who have undergone a training course to become trainers themselves. They now deliver sessions on disability awareness to new staff at the East Regional Office in Wymondham.
