The Maltings

Fakenham, Norfolk

The Maltings opened in 2001 and is run as a clubhouse for around 50 local people.

Fully accessible to wheelchair users, the facilities include a life and hoists, and is close to the centre of the market town.

The training kitchen is used daily to help people learn cooking skills and to provide lunches for everyone. Food Hygiene and Health & Safety sessions are also organised regularly.

The laundry teaches further independent living skills, as many of the members are either living in their own accommodation or planning to in the future.

The large studio room offers an ideal area in which to listen to music or watch films. It is regularly used for drama, dance and relaxation sessions. The library gives members an opportunity to access a wide range of information such as books, tapes and DVDs.

The computer suite is popular and used all the time. A variety of fun and educational software is available, as well as a projector and web cameras. Many IT skills are put to excellent use in the production of the in-house magazine, The Buzz.

The large sensory garden was established in 2004 and is open to the public. A project group ensure that the facility is kept tidy and looked after.

The multi-sensory room is a valuable resource and used daily. The atmosphere can be changed to suit each individual, with a range of calming scents and lights, or noisy music and bright projections.

Members are encouraged to volunteer and support is provided as appropriate. Some volunteer in local charity shops or the town library, or at wildlife venues, whilst some help around the Clubhouse in various roles to support other people.
